More than 125 students from eight area high schools, including Mrs. Meyers' Business Math students, competed in the 2023 JA(Junior Achievement) Stock Market Challenge today at Monroe 2 BOCES today. This is a simulation-based program in which teams of students compete by investing and trading fake funds in the real market creating draft portfolios and finalizing their stock selections.
⬆️🔟 Livonia's four teams all placed in the top 10 (about 40 teams participated)!
🥉 The team of Luke F, Ryan O, and Austin F took third place. They received a $25 gift card and a book on finance.
🥇 The team of Owen C, Colin C, Lincoln G, and Peter R got first place and a $100 gift card and book on finance.
The Challenge, alongside JA Take Stock in Your Future classroom lessons, introduces high school students to the basic concepts of how the stock market works and the impact of current events on the stock market. Students discover the benefits and challenges of investing in the stock market as part of a broader, long-term investment strategy and the risks and rewards of trading.
During the Challenge, teams will be given $500,000 to invest. Each new “trading day” (every 1 minute) will bring news from the market that students need to analyze and then utilize floor traders to make their decisions. As the students work in teams to make decisions on when to buy, sell, or trade stocks, they begin to see how every choice made in investing relates to its future success. At the end of the Challenge, the teams who have built the largest portfolios win.
