Livonia's Odyssey of the Mind teams will compete at the Regional Competition at Mount Morris High School this weekend, Saturday, March 12. Our 4 teams consist of one elementary team, coached by Jennifer Dorey, two middle school teams, coached by Dr. Jennifer Gkourlias and Jill Loftus, and one high school team coached by Mr. Miller. Our teams have been preparing for this competition since late September and are looking forward to a good showing this weekend! At the competition each team will compete in a Spontaneous event as well as a Long-Term presentation. All of our problem solutions have been designed and built by our students without any outside assistance. Teams have created original songs, music, scripts, costumes and dances to solve one of the 5 international Odyssey problems for the 2021-2022 competition season. If all goes well, we may be lucky enough to be sending one or more of our teams to the New York State OM competition at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse on March 26.

The BrainStormers team finished the regular season tonight. In the first match, Katie D. (aka “The human defibrillator”) brought the team back to life by single-handedly going 10 for 10 in the bonus round, a feat never seen before by the moderator. Livonia was able to hang on to the lead after that to defeat Cal-Mum 250-230. Match #2 was just as exciting as Livonia came from way behind to make it a one question game in the final seconds. Unfortunately, Avon held on to win 240-210. Nothing’s official yet, but Livonia will likely be in the playoffs on 3/22. Leading scorers in the buzz-in portion were Kate A. (70 points), Katie D. (30 points), and Grace D., Eliot G., and Nathan W. (10 points each). Angela T. is just saving her energy for the championship match.

Mr. Greene's health classes have been working on a project based on the movie "Inside Out". The students were asked to remember three core memories from the past that created their personalities. These positive memories created their island of imaginations. The students were to draw these islands and discover that their past experiences with emotions have created the person they are today. The students also had to create a list of experiences in their lives that they had shown joy, sadness, anger, disgust and fear. They finished their project by coming up with coping strategies they use when they are feeling negative emotions. The students did an amazing job and learned how their emotions drive their experiences in the past and present situations.
