Building On Our Progress

Expanding Opportunities for Students

Over the past five years, our focus has continued to be on creating as many pathways, experiences, and opportunities as possible for every student to find success. We have made meaningful academic progress while significantly expanding what is available to students from their earliest years in Livonia through graduation.

At the Elementary School, we transitioned our Universal Prekindergarten program to a full-day model and increased the number of students we are able to serve. We have also expanded special education programming so that more students can have their needs met in Livonia while remaining connected to their school and community. New clubs and activities have created additional opportunities for elementary students to explore interests, build relationships, and become more connected to school.

At the Middle/High School, students now have access to a much broader range of elective opportunities and an increasing number of college-credit-bearing courses. Through our partnership with Syracuse University and Genesee Community College, the District has transitioned to covering the full cost of those college credits for our families. During the 2025-2026 school year alone, those opportunities represented more than $439,000 in savings when compared with SUNY tuition rates and approximately $1.9 million when compared with average private college tuition in the Rochester area. This year, even more Livonia students are taking advantage of college-level coursework while still in high school.

We have also increased the number of students participating in Career and Technical Education programming, giving more students access to hands-on learning, industry-aligned coursework, and career pathways that connect directly to life after graduation.

Opportunities beyond the traditional classroom have grown as well. We have increased the number of athletic teams available to our students and expanded student clubs and activities. We have also restored international travel opportunities at the Middle/High School. Our students traveled to Costa Rica in 2026, will experience Paris and Barcelona during the 2026-2027 school year, and will have an opportunity to travel to Central Europe as an extension of our Genocide Studies and Foreign Language courses.

These experiences are about much more than the individual program or trip. Together, they reflect a broader commitment to helping every student find a place to belong, discover new interests, challenge themselves, and prepare for what comes next.

Building Better Spaces
Our facilities have changed dramatically during that same period. Many of the projects that appeared only as plans and renderings five years ago are now part of everyday life in our schools. Renovated classrooms and instructional spaces, improved safety and security, a new Transportation Facility, significant Elementary and Middle/High School improvements, and the Saunders Sports Complex have all strengthened the environments in which our students learn, compete, perform, and grow.

What I am particularly proud of is how much we were ultimately able to accomplish within the scope authorized by our community.

Through careful planning, value engineering, the strategic use of available funding, and the generosity of Mr. Saunders, we were able to expand upon the work originally envisioned when the project was developed. As construction progressed and opportunities emerged, we incorporated additional improvements that included further renovations to our Pre-K wing, special education classrooms, additional Elementary School infrastructure improvements, Middle/High School flooring and classroom windows, auditorium and gymnasium infrastructure, the MHS courtyard water mitigation project, District Office relocation, the MHS parking lot, districtwide communication and furniture upgrades, and additional enhancements throughout the Saunders Sports Complex.

These improvements allowed us to address additional needs, strengthen instructional and operational spaces, and make efficient use of resources while construction was already underway.

Planning Responsibly for the Future

When our community authorized the previous capital project, the financial plan anticipated a modest tax increase associated with a portion of the work. Through the extraordinary generosity of Mr. Saunders, whose $1 million contribution supported the athletic complex, and the Board of Education’s careful long-term financial planning, the District was ultimately able to complete the project without an increase to the tax levy attributable to the project.

Even more importantly, we were able to do so while accomplishing substantially more within the authorized project than was included in the original base scope, while also positioning the District financially for the next phase of improvements to our schools.

That same approach continues to guide us today. We want to plan ahead, protect the community’s investment in its schools, maximize State Aid and other available resources, address needs before they become emergencies, and make thoughtful decisions that will benefit students and taxpayers for decades to come.

As I look back at where Livonia was five years ago, I am incredibly proud of what our students, staff, Board of Education, families, and community have accomplished together. Our students have more opportunities. Our academic programs are stronger. Our schools have been transformed. Thoughtful planning has positioned us well for the future.

None of that happens by accident. It is the result of talented and dedicated staff, students who continue to challenge themselves, a Board of Education willing to plan for the long term, and a community that continues to support its schools.

Our goal now is simple: to keep building on our progress.
